Temporary Plot Mechanics
These mechanics are in play for our august online event, THE UNDYING PRINCE:
Nightmares
[New Threat]
The [Nightmares] Threat represents the corruption of human behavior, morals, and personality as the Mortis Amaranthine intrudes into reality. This is a representation of your mental resilience in the face of the unknown, and the sanity warping ability of the mysterious creatures that haunt Barogue.
This [Threat] effectively INCREASES the Anomaly Score for purposes of Mortis interactions, even of non-Aberrant characters. This mechanic adds +1 to Anomaly for resistance for each level of Nightmares, but not for normal Anomaly rolls. This mechanic can push the penalty for Anomaly rolls above the +3 limit of the Bones system. Remember, this is the only roll in BB that you want to FAIL.
Mechanical Effect:
Nightmares 1: +1 Anomaly Influence Checks
Nightmares 2: +2 Anomaly Influence Checks
Nightmares 3: + 3 Anomaly Influence Checks
Failing an Anomaly Influence check allows the ST to momentarily control your next actions as the fear takes hold of you; perhaps you unwittingly scream or squeeze the trigger of your gun, or run off into the darkness of Barogue. As reality becomes warped and unreliable, you may see things that are not there, hear voices where there is only silence, feel ever present eyes tracking your movements, wishing you harm. Your mind replays and brings to life your deepest nightmares, making your behavior erratic, and ruled by fear, and paranoia.
Why would you want this Threat?
Certain rooms in the Discord server will open depending on the level of Threat your character has. This will be awarded as a custom role on the server once you’ve fulfilled the requirements. This might be important as the story of the weekend progresses.
How is the score raised or lowered?
Contact with [REDACTED] can raise your Nightmares score, and you can earn this during certain mods over the weekend.
A Zone of Mechanics in the soft RP space can purposefully increase your Threat.
Characters can spend 1 permanent Mind (for the duration of the online event) to avoid an increase in [Nightmares] score.
Example: A character with 4 Mind may permanently lower their Mind to 3 for the duration of the event to avoid a rise in [Nightmares].
